In the eighteenth century, Parisian dressmakers sent miniature dolls across Europe dressed in the latest styles. Clients chose from the doll; seamstresses copied it. It was, in effect, the first sample.
From doll to file
Today a growing number of houses design and approve garments in three dimensions before a single metre of cloth is cut. Fit, drape and colour can be reviewed on screen; physical samples are made only for what survives.
The savings are real: in fabric, in freight, in time. The cultural shift is bigger: buyers, press and even customers can see a collection earlier, and in more detail, than ever before.
