Why Everyone Is Dressing Like a Period Drama

Empire lines, corsetry and puff sleeves: television’s wardrobe department is setting the high street’s agenda.

The fashion plate was the original influencer: a hand-coloured print of the latest gown, circulated so that women far from Paris or London could see what was being worn.

Streaming as a fashion plate

Today the same job is done by a streaming series. A season of Regency romance can send searches for corsets and empire waists climbing within days of release.

For brands, the lesson is timing: costume-led trends arrive fast and fade fast. The winners translate the mood, not the costume.
